Eric Clapton Expands Journeyman With Newly Found Tracks

Eric Clapton is revisiting one of the most important records of his career. His 1989 double-platinum album Journeyman is set to return this fall as an expanded deluxe edition, featuring four previously unheard tracks uncovered from the original sessions. Journeyman: Deluxe Edition will be released on November 21 on CD, vinyl, and digital formats, with preorders now open.

According to the new liner notes, the discovery of these bonus cuts began with Clapton himself: “A few years ago, Clapton was on YouTube, just poking around looking at old footage and songs, and found that fans had uploaded outtakes and bonus cuts of songs from the Journeyman sessions. After a search through Clapton’s vaults, these four bonus cuts are now on the album, mixed and mastered anew for this edition.”

Among the additions is “Forever,” written by the late Jerry Williams, a longtime collaborator who also penned “Pretending,” “Forever Man,” and several other Clapton favorites.

When it first arrived in 1989, Journeyman marked a shift away from pop toward a deeper, blues-driven sound. Singles like “Pretending” and “Bad Love” dominated the rock charts, with “No Alibis” also climbing into the Top 5. The album featured high-profile guests, including George Harrison, Phil Collins, and Daryl Hall. Clapton himself described the title as a statement of identity: “Journeyman … it’s what I want to be known as. I like to think I’m a craftsman. I think I’m always working on mastering my craft.”

Alongside the reissue, Clapton will hit the road for a short U.S. tour beginning next week. He’ll open on September 8 in Nashville before heading to Cleveland, Philadelphia, Boston, New York City, and Connecticut.
