The Untold Stories of Artists Who Turned Down Working With Prince

2016 felt like a gut punch for music fans. In one year, the world lost Prince, David Bowie, and Leonard Cohen — giants who had shaped modern culture. Their deaths made it painfully clear: an entire generation of groundbreaking artists was entering its twilight, and we had to cherish every remaining moment with them.

Prince, in particular, seemed untouchable. He was futuristic, endlessly creative, and always present in music’s bloodstream. The thought that he could suddenly be gone felt unreal. His passing left a void, not just for fans, but for musicians who once had the chance to work with him — and said no.

Over the years, three artists have openly admitted they declined Prince’s invitations. Their reasons varied — nerves, creative differences, and personal struggles — but all carried a weight of regret once the opportunity was gone.

Gabrielle: Overwhelmed in the Moment

British singer Gabrielle was once invited onstage by Prince during a show in Abu Dhabi. Starstruck and unprepared, she froze.

“Yes, because I’m a scaredy cat,” she admitted later. “I was in awe of him, and I just couldn’t do it. It was down to my insecurity. I’m kicking myself now — today I would do it, but some things are once-in-a-lifetime.”

Danny Elfman: Creative Boundaries

Composer Danny Elfman, best known for his work on films like Batman (1989), was asked to collaborate with Prince on the movie’s score. He declined, not out of disrespect, but because he felt their approaches were incompatible.

“My feeling was that Prince was a great songwriter, but not a film composer,” Elfman explained. “I would have ended up as a glorified orchestrator, not a composer. And I just wasn’t willing to do that.”

Shania Twain: A Personal Crossroads

For Shania Twain, the timing was too personal. Prince reached out as she was going through a painful divorce.

“He said, ‘Shania, why don’t you come to Paisley Park? I want to make the next Rumours album with you,’” she recalled. “But I wasn’t ready. I thought the door would stay open… and then he died.”

Each of these moments shows how human even the biggest stars can be — scared, conflicted, or simply caught at the wrong time. What unites Gabrielle, Elfman, and Twain is the deep respect they had for Prince, and the quiet ache of knowing the collaboration will never happen.

Because with Prince, every lost chance feels like a piece of music history that could have been.
