“He Wore a Cross Every Day”: Jack Osbourne Reveals the Faith Behind Ozzy’s ‘Prince of Darkness’ Image

For decades, Ozzy Osbourne carried one of the most infamous nicknames in rock history — the “Prince of Darkness.” His dark stage persona, shocking antics, and the ominous imagery surrounding Black Sabbath helped create an image that many critics and religious groups interpreted as satanic.

But according to Ozzy’s son, Jack Osbourne, the reality behind that public image was very different.

Speaking during an appearance on the Hate to Break It to Ya podcast, Jack addressed the long-standing rumors about his father’s beliefs — and insisted that Ozzy was actually a Christian.

“My Dad Was a Believer in Christ”

During the conversation, Jack explained that his father’s personal faith often went unnoticed because of the darker themes associated with his music and stage image.

According to Jack:

“My dad was a believer in Christ. He had the Bible. He wore a cross every day of his life.”

Jack also revealed that Ozzy was often frustrated by the widespread belief that he was involved in satanism. The singer understood why the rumors existed, but he felt the public narrative did not reflect who he truly was.

Inside the Osbourne household, Jack said, the reality was far more ordinary and spiritual than the image people had created around the legendary rocker.

The Origins of Ozzy’s Dark Reputation

Much of the confusion about Ozzy’s beliefs traces back to the early years of Black Sabbath, the band widely credited with pioneering heavy metal.

Formed in 1968 in Birmingham, England, the group became known for music that explored darker subjects than most rock bands of the time. Songs often referenced themes such as:

  • war
  • fear and paranoia
  • supernatural imagery
  • moral struggle between good and evil

The band’s name itself came from a horror film starring Boris Karloff, which helped establish their ominous aesthetic.

Albums such as Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Master of Reality featured haunting riffs, eerie artwork, and lyrics that alarmed some religious groups during the 1970s.

As a result, critics frequently accused the band of promoting satanism — a claim the members consistently denied.

Lyrics That Warned Against Evil

Ironically, some of Black Sabbath’s most famous songs actually warned about the dangers of dark forces rather than glorifying them.

The band’s debut track “Black Sabbath” tells the story of a man encountering a terrifying demonic figure and realizing he must turn away from evil.

Bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler, who grew up in a Catholic household, wrote many lyrics reflecting spiritual conflict and morality.

Over the years, members of the band repeatedly explained that their music was meant to explore fear and darkness, not celebrate it.

Ozzy’s Personal Faith

Throughout his life, Ozzy often spoke about spirituality in interviews.

Despite his wild reputation, he was known to:

  • wear a cross necklace regularly
  • pray before performances
  • keep religious items close to him

Friends and family members have mentioned that faith played a role in how he viewed life, particularly during difficult periods involving addiction and personal struggles.

Jack’s comments suggest that Ozzy’s belief in Christianity remained constant, even as his stage persona leaned heavily into gothic imagery.

The Prince of Darkness vs. the Real Person

The contrast between Ozzy’s public image and his private beliefs highlights a long-standing pattern in rock history.

Stage personas often exaggerate or dramatize themes for artistic effect. In Ozzy’s case, the “Prince of Darkness” label became a defining part of his brand — reinforced by shocking stage moments, theatrical performances, and the darker tones of heavy metal music.

But according to Jack Osbourne, the man behind that image was far more grounded than fans might expect.

To him, Ozzy was not a satanic icon but a father who kept a Bible nearby and quietly maintained his faith.

A Legacy That Transcends the Myth

Regardless of public perception, Ozzy Osbourne remains one of the most influential figures in rock and heavy metal history.

As the frontman of Black Sabbath and later a hugely successful solo artist, he helped shape a genre that has inspired generations of musicians.

The darker imagery associated with his music may have sparked controversy for decades, but Jack Osbourne’s recent comments offer a reminder that the real story behind rock legends is often more complex than their stage personas.

In Ozzy’s case, the man known around the world as the “Prince of Darkness” may have quietly held very different beliefs from the ones many people assumed.
