Pink Floyd Celebrated With First-Ever UK Coin From The Royal Mint

Pink Floyd have been honoured with their first-ever UK commemorative coin, as The Royal Mint unveils a new Music Legends release celebrating one of rock’s most influential bands. The coin went on sale on 14 May 2026, with prices starting at £18.50 and rising to £5,320 for a limited 1oz Gold Proof Coin capped at just 100 units worldwide.

The design puts the iconic prism from The Dark Side of the Moon at the center of the reverse, created by designer Henry Gray. A selection of the coins also features a rainbow prism effect, bringing the artwork to life in full colour. The Royal Mint said the choice of imagery was meant to capture the band’s instantly recognizable visual identity as well as its musical legacy.

The Royal Mint’s press release dated 14 May 2026 said the band is being celebrated for its “extraordinary and enduring legacy,” noting that more than half a century after Pink Floyd first emerged from London’s underground scene, the group still stands as one of the defining names in modern music. The Mint also highlighted that The Dark Side of the Moon has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, said the band’s music and imagery “have transcended generations,” adding that “the iconic prism is instantly recognisable to fans around the world” and praising Henry Gray for bringing it to life “with the craft and detail this band deserves.” She also said The Royal Mint was proud to help preserve Pink Floyd’s legacy “forever.”

The coin is part of The Royal Mint’s Music Legends series, which has already celebrated artists such as David Bowie, George Michael, Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Freddie Mercury, and Iron Maiden. The Mint says the series has already reached collectors and music fans in 108 countries, with nearly half a million coins distributed so far.

The Pink Floyd release also includes an exclusive plectrum available in limited numbers in gold, silver, and dark chrome, designed by Royal Mint designer Daniel Thorne as a tribute tied to the band’s album artwork and David Gilmour’s famous guitar work on “Time.”

Pink Floyd, formed in London in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, with David Gilmour joining in 1968, went on to define progressive rock through albums including The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979). The coin release is designed to reflect that long-running impact, not just as a band, but as a cultural force.
