Barry Manilow Unsure If His “Voice Will Fully Return” Following Cancer Battle

Legendary pop music pioneer Barry Manilow has opened up about the deep personal fears and severe vocal toll following a hidden battle with lung cancer. In a deeply transparent interview with ABC News’ Chris Connelly on Good Morning America, the 82-year-old icon admitted that his career path remains entirely uncertain just weeks before his scheduled return to the stage.

“My voice, I don’t know whether it’s coming back,” Manilow confessed emotionally. “I did my first sound check about a month ago and I didn’t sound like me at all. I just couldn’t believe that it’s over.”

The legendary performer recalled the precise moment the reality set in during rehearsals with his band:

“That is really upsetting because I don’t want to stop,” he stated. “I looked at my band and they were all looking at the floor. That was the first hint. Something was not right. I’ve always taken my voice for granted. I don’t take it seriously. Now I do because it doesn’t seem to be there the way it always was.”

Manilow’s medical crisis initially began in late 2025 when a routine MRI examination uncovered a suspicious spot on his lung. In December 2025, surgeons performed a successful operation to remove the cancerous tumor. While his medical team confirmed he would not require any chemotherapy or radiation, his physical recovery faced a terrifying setback when he contracted severe post-operative pneumonia, resulting in a critical seven-day stay in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The health scare has forced the singer—who turns 83 later this month—into a heavy period of personal reflection regarding his 50-year musical footprint.

Despite his vocal challenges, Manilow’s brand-new studio record, What a Time, officially arrives this week. He remains hopeful and plans to push forward with his summer touring obligations, which include a highly anticipated Las Vegas residency starting June 25, 2026, followed by a string of national US dates.

“I can’t wait to get back,” Manilow concluded resolutely. “I’m in great shape. I’m ready to go. I just hope my voice is. If I sound good, that would be great… I really don’t want to cry on stage, but I don’t know whether I’ll be able to hold that back this time.”
