Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy is joining the chorus of praise following Rush’s emotional and powerful comeback concert on June 7, 2026, at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles — the band’s first full show in 11 years.
Portnoy, who has long been a massive Rush fan and was once considered by many as a potential candidate to fill the late Neil Peart’s shoes, watched the show via livestream and shared an emotional Instagram post the next day.
“So many feelings and emotions today… I wasn’t there in person last night, but like so many of us around the world, I was glued to YouTube all night long,” Portnoy wrote. “What can I say that hasn’t been written already…? It was magical! The setlist was absolutely PERFECT!! (and to think they still have around 3 other variations up their sleeves to come…) Anika absolutely KILLED IT in the best way imaginable. I was so happy for her… nailing all of the big Neil moments with a giant smile on her face the whole time! She really is the perfect choice for this!”
Portnoy also highlighted the tasteful tributes to Neil Peart, the insane production, and his happiness for Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson getting to perform again. He admitted getting emotional (even crying) during the Neil tributes.
The German drummer Anika Nilles made her full concert debut with the band, delivering a standout performance that earned roaring applause from the 18,000-strong crowd — especially during the iconic drum solo section in “Tom Sawyer.”
Mike Portnoy’s heartfelt endorsement carries extra weight. As one of the world’s most respected progressive drummers and a longtime Rush admirer, his genuine excitement and relief at not being the one under the massive pressure speaks volumes. Anika Nilles stepping into Neil Peart’s legendary role and earning this kind of instant respect from peers is a beautiful moment for the prog/rock community. It shows the torch is in excellent hands and that Rush’s legacy continues to evolve.
