Keith Urban is fully embracing spontaneity as he prepares to release his yacht rock album Flow State on June 12, 2026.
In an exclusive interview with Taste of Country, Urban revealed that — for possibly the first time in his long career — he has no concrete roadmap for his next musical chapter.
“I have no idea,” Urban admitted when asked about future plans. “I didn’t expect this, I don’t know… I really don’t have a plan with what I’m doing next. I think being spontaneous and having fun in the studio is how this record got born and I’m up for doing more of that, whatever that looks like and sounds like.”
Flow State — which features mostly yacht rock covers from the ’70s and ’80s plus one original song (“We Go Back” with Michael McDonald) — came together organically while breaking in his new Nashville studio. Urban says this carefree approach is something he wants to carry forward.
This marks a shift for the veteran artist, who has typically planned albums and tours well in advance. Now, at this stage of his career, he seems content to let creativity guide him without rigid timelines.
It’s refreshing to see a major star like Keith Urban willing to let go of the usual industry pressure and just enjoy the creative process. After decades of massive success, he’s earned the right to follow the fun and see where inspiration takes him. Whether he returns to original material or dives deeper into covers and collaborations, fans can expect something authentic and joyful from whatever comes next.
