Former Lions DC Aaron Glenn Becomes Dark Horse Candidate For Major NFL Award

Aaron Glenn Named Dark-Horse Candidate for NFL Coach of the Year Award

Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn may be leading a rebuilding New York Jets franchise, but one NFL analyst believes the first-year head coach could emerge as a surprise contender for the NFL’s Coach of the Year award.

Glenn departed Detroit following the Lions’ dominant 15-2 campaign in 2024 to become the Jets’ head coach. He joined a franchise that has struggled for more than a decade and currently owns the NFL’s longest active postseason drought.

Despite the challenges facing New York, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay believes Glenn has a realistic path toward earning one of the league’s most prestigious coaching honors.

“One candidate being slept on is Aaron Glenn,” Kay wrote. “The New York Jets’ head coach is in the bottom half of the field with 30-1 odds, but Glenn’s path to the award is far clearer than most. He simply needs to guide Gang Green to a playoff appearance to win it.”

Kay pointed to previous Coach of the Year winners who transformed struggling organizations into playoff teams. Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski, for example, captured the award twice after leading the Browns to postseason appearances in 2020 and 2023.

The Jets have not appeared in the playoffs since the 2010 season, when they reached the AFC Championship Game under Rex Ryan. Given that lengthy drought, even a modest turnaround could place Glenn squarely in the Coach of the Year conversation.

“Considering the Jets have been mired in the longest postseason drought of any NFL team by a large margin, it shouldn’t even take a double-digit number of wins for Glenn to win the award,” Kay wrote.

Kay also suggested that a .500 record and a Wild Card berth could be enough for Glenn to both solidify his standing in New York and emerge as a serious candidate for the award.

“He could secure his job and the Coach of the Year award with a .500 or better season that results in a Wild Card berth.”

Following a disappointing debut campaign, Glenn accepted responsibility for the team’s struggles and emphasized that improvement begins with him as the organization’s leader.

The challenge ahead remains significant, but if Glenn can guide the Jets back to the postseason for the first time in more than a decade, he could transform both the franchise’s trajectory and his own standing among the NFL’s coaching elite.
