A powerful tribute to Billy Joel took place at the legendary Carnegie Hall, where an all-star lineup gathered to celebrate the music and legacy of the “Piano Man.” The special event, titled “The Music of Billy Joel,” brought together artists from across the rock, pop, and soul worlds to reinterpret some of Joel’s most beloved songs in front of a packed audience.
The concert was organized by producer Michael Dorf as part of the long-running Carnegie Hall tribute series and featured Joel’s own touring band serving as the house band for the evening. The musicians were led by longtime Joel collaborator and music director David Rosenthal, ensuring the arrangements stayed faithful to Joel’s signature sound.
Although Joel himself did not perform, he attended the event and received a standing ovation from the crowd as musicians paid tribute to one of the most influential songbooks in American rock and pop music.
The lineup for the evening included an impressive list of artists such as Rob Thomas, Gavin DeGraw, Pat Monahan, Rufus Wainwright, Natalie Merchant, Wyclef Jean, and Yola. Joel’s daughter Alexa Ray Joel also took the stage, adding a personal moment to the celebration.
The night began with a stirring rendition of “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)”, performed by Yola, setting the tone for a show that celebrated Joel’s storytelling and musical range. Rob Thomas followed with a heartfelt performance of “Vienna,” while Pat Monahan delivered a delicate interpretation of “She’s Always a Woman.”
Throughout the evening, each artist brought their own style to Joel’s classics. Mary Chapin Carpenter performed the emotional ballad “And So It Goes,” while Matt Nathanson took on “I Go to Extremes” and the dramatic “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)” — a song originally released on Joel’s 1976 album Turnstiles.
Jon McLaughlin offered a lively take on “Everybody Loves You Now,” before one of the night’s most personal moments arrived when Alexa Ray Joel performed her father’s song “This Night.” The emotional performance drew loud applause from the crowd, who clearly appreciated the family connection behind the tribute.
Rufus Wainwright followed with “Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel),” one of Joel’s most tender compositions. Later in the show, soul singer Ledisi delivered a powerful version of Joel’s more recent song “Turn the Lights Back On.”
Other highlights included Marc Roberge and legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman performing “The Downeaster ‘Alexa,’” while Bettye LaVette delivered a unique gender-flipped rendition of “She’s Got a Way.”
As the night progressed, the show moved into some of Joel’s biggest hits. Sammy Rae energized the audience with “The River of Dreams” and “Get It Right the First Time,” while Natalie Merchant gave a passionate performance of “Allentown.” Gavin DeGraw later took the stage with a high-energy version of “Big Shot.”
The evening built toward a series of fan-favorite finales. Curtis Harding performed “Uptown Girl,” and the duo Lawrence delivered “Only the Good Die Young.” Near the end of the show, Andrew McMahon led the crowd in a massive sing-along of “Piano Man,” arguably Joel’s most iconic song.
Finally, the concert closed with a full-cast performance of “You May Be Right,” bringing all of the evening’s artists together on stage for a joyful finale that celebrated Joel’s enduring legacy.
