Billy Joel’s legendary career is set to take center stage in a brand-new HBO documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes. The two-part special, directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Lavin, will premiere this summer, giving fans an intimate look at the life, music, and personal struggles of the iconic singer-songwriter.
The documentary promises to be a deep dive into Joel’s journey, featuring never-before-seen performances, personal home movies, and rare photographs. According to HBO’s official logline, the film will present “an expansive portrait of the life and music of Billy Joel, exploring the love, loss, and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting.”
Lacy, one of the documentary’s directors, admitted that she wasn’t initially well-versed in Joel’s story but quickly became fascinated by his life and music.
“I was drawn to his story as someone who knew little at the outset and was astounded at how autobiographical his songs are and how complex his story is,” she said.
“For those who think they know Joel’s story, as well as those who are not as familiar, I believe this two-part film is both a revelation and a surprise.”
This isn’t Joel’s first collaboration with HBO—more than 40 years ago, the network aired his classic Live From Long Island concert special. Now, decades later, the Piano Man is once again sharing his story with the world in what promises to be an honest and revealing documentary.
Meanwhile, Joel is currently recovering from surgery, forcing him to reschedule several upcoming concerts. However, he reassured fans that he’s eager to return to performing, with a comeback date set for July 5th.
“While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first,” Joel said. “I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”
With his remarkable career spanning decades and his music continuing to resonate across generations, Billy Joel: And So It Goes is set to be an essential watch for fans and newcomers alike.
