Former David Ellefson has fired back at **Dave Mustaine after the Megadeth frontman made remarks about a former member’s “past behavior” standing in the way of a band reunion — remarks widely interpreted as directed at Ellefson. The exchange has reignited longstanding tensions between the two metal veterans.
Mustaine’s “Past Behavior” Comment
In December 2025, Mustaine appeared on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk and was asked about the possibility of Megadeth’s farewell tour featuring former band members. The guitarist said this wasn’t in the cards because of “the behavior of one of the band members in the past.” He didn’t name names, but many fans and observers assumed he was referring to Ellefson, who was fired from the band in 2021 amid a scandal involving explicit video content that leaked online.
Mustaine has since been clear that his farewell tour — supporting the band’s final self‑titled album — will not include ex‑members. He’s cited concerns about how past conduct might affect the current lineup.
Ellefson’s Fiery Response
In a recent appearance on the Quemar Un Patrullero podcast with Argentine journalist Gustavo Olmedo, Ellefson didn’t hold back. Responding to Mustaine’s comments, he angrily dismissed the suggestion that his past actions should exclude him from any future involvement.
“You know what? Fuck off. Just fuck off,” Ellefson said when discussing what he sees as Mustaine’s deflection and moral positioning. “Who is that one person? It wasn’t me, ’cause I didn’t do anything that would prevent me from coming back at all.”
Ellefson went further, framing the situation as one where business decisions overrode personal loyalty and long history together.
“People saying, ‘I’m really disappointed that they chose business over brotherhood,’ ’cause at the end of the day, the brotherhood will always last beyond the business of owning a rock band — especially something we started and built together.”
He also noted that other prominent musicians had reached out to him following his dismissal, telling him they supported his stance and were disappointed with how he was treated.
A Relationship Frozen in Time
The fallout between Ellefson and Mustaine goes back years. After being fired from Megadeth in 2021 — amid the leak of explicit video footage that both Ellefson and the other party confirmed was consensual with an adult — their relationship deteriorated.
Ellefson later revealed that the pair hadn’t spoken in years, saying there had been “not one word” exchanged since his departure.
He has also publicly criticized Mustaine’s handling of his contributions to the band’s music, claiming that Mustaine did not want his bass or lyrical work featured on recent material, and that some of his written parts were removed from the band’s last album.
In a separate interview, Ellefson even compared the situation with how Metallica treated Mustaine’s exit from that band decades earlier — noting that Metallica preserved Mustaine’s contributions and credited him, whereas he says Megadeth cut his out.
Current Phase and Moving Forward
While the feud continues to simmer publicly, Ellefson has been active in other metal projects since leaving Megadeth, including Metal Church and other bands. He’s also expressed that his final meaningful connection to Megadeth ended with the 2018 tour and the Dystopia album, and that he doesn’t harbour bitterness.
At the same time, he maintains that his dismissal and the narrative coming from Mustaine are unfair, especially given their long shared history dating back to co‑founding Megadeth in 1983.
Legacy and Fan Reaction
The back‑and‑forth hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans. Some metal followers believe Ellefson’s exclusion has hurt the band’s dynamic, while others feel the split was necessary given the circumstances around his 2021 departure. Endless online discussion — ranging from Reddit threads to social posts — reflects divided opinions about whether the feud should define the legacy of one of thrash metal’s most important bands.
Whatever the future holds for Megadeth’s farewell tour lineup, the public clash between Ellefson and Mustaine underscores how personal history, pride, and business can clash — even among icons of heavy metal.
