In a fresh interview with Billboard, Emily Armstrong, the new vocalist for Linkin Park, opened up about stepping into the role once held by Chester Bennington.
When asked if she felt any pressure taking on such a huge responsibility, Armstrong responded, “This band means a lot to so many people — it’s more than just music. It’s a huge deal for the world.” She emphasized how the band’s integrity helped her stay grounded through the transition. “There were definitely those moments where it hit me, like, ‘Wow, this is huge,’ especially when you think about the size of the concerts. I’m riding high, but then I remember there’s a ton of work ahead.”
She continued, “Singing these [older] songs, originally performed by someone so loved — it’s like, ‘How do I stay true to myself while also keeping the emotions he brought to them alive?’ That’s been my challenge. The energy was already there during the album process, so my job was to embrace it.”
Emily added, “I had to figure out what the songs meant to me personally, not just as a fan, but as the one singing them. It’s a balance between technical skill and emotion. It’s Chester’s voice and mine, but I want to make sure it feels the same as when I listen to it, because that’s what people connect with. I hope I can bring that same passion.”
Recently, Linkin Park welcomed both Armstrong and drummer Colin Brittain as new members. Alongside this, they released their first single in seven years, The Emptiness Machine. Armstrong steps in for Bennington, while Brittain takes over for drummer Rob Bourdon. Longtime members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Dave Farrell, and Joe Hahn have reunited for the band’s upcoming album From Zero and a few special performances.
Reflecting on the new album, Shinoda shared, “Before Linkin Park, we called ourselves Xero. This album title is a nod to that start and our current journey.” He explained that the album explores past, present, and future emotions. “It’s our classic sound but with a fresh energy. We made this with so much love for our bandmates, friends, family, and fans. We’re really proud of what Linkin Park has become, and we’re excited for what’s next.”
From Zero is set to release on November 15. Talinda Bennington, Chester’s widow, is fully behind the band’s return with their new vocalist, showing her support by reacting with heart and fire emojis on Armstrong’s Instagram post.
