Geddy Lee on Anika Nilles Joining Rush – “She was not a Rush fan”

When Rush originally announced their return to the stage in 2026 for the “Fifty Something” tour—led by surviving members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson—many fans assumed that finding a drummer to fill the irreplaceable shoes of the late Neil Peart would be the toughest part. Enter German drummer Anika Nilles, a formidable player with a rising profile, who Lee now publicly credits with giving the duo the confidence to hit the road again. In a recent interview Lee admitted, “She was not a Rush fan… but she’s an incredibly hard worker and she’s got great technical facility.”

Lee continued by reflecting on the emotional weight of the decision: “Well, I’m a bit overwhelmed right now… Alex and I, after all this time, did some serious soul-searching and came to the decision that we miss it.”  The implication is clear: what matters more than fan allegiance is the devotion and musicianship that can honour Rush’s legacy. Nilles herself acknowledged the challenge, writing on Instagram: “Big shoes to fill! Thank you, Geddy and Alex, for trusting me and welcoming me on this incredible journey.”

Lee also revealed that the selection process involved a private trip to Canada, where the three tested the chemistry without announcing anything to the public. “We very secretly brought Anika… It wasn’t an audition because we weren’t sure we were going to tour,” he said.  By naming Nilles as their drummer, Rush signals a deeply deliberate choice—not to replace Peart, but to carry the torch forward with respect and fresh energy.

In the end, Lee’s message is both a nod to the past and a hopeful look ahead: “There will never be another Neil, but we believe in moving forward.”  Fans of Rush can now prepare for their revival, understanding that this isn’t just a nostalgia act—it’s a careful, meaningful step into new territory with reverence and ambition.
