In a conversation with Toronto Life, Geddy Lee of Rush opened up about the band’s creative journey and the influences that shaped their music. Lee discussed how, despite the industry’s push to follow the more commercial styles of bands like Led Zeppelin and Bad Company, Rush stayed true to their unique artistic vision. This is evident in their concept album 2112, which delves into space-themed narratives.

When asked about his distinct singing voice, Lee shared his admiration for hard rock legends like Steve Marriott and Robert Plant. While he has made efforts to broaden his vocal range over the years, he noted that Rush’s die-hard fans have always appreciated his signature high-pitched vocals.

Lee also spoke about the profound influence Led Zeppelin had on Rush. He fondly recalled the first time he and his bandmates listened to Zeppelin’s debut album, particularly tracks like “Good Times Bad Times” and “Communication Breakdown,” which left them in awe. According to Lee, Zeppelin’s ability to innovate and push beyond the confines of heavy metal had a lasting impact on Rush’s musical evolution.

One of Lee’s most cherished memories is attending a Led Zeppelin concert in Toronto. He described the experience as magical and one of the best concerts he has ever attended. The event was so special to him and his friends that they stayed up all night to ensure they got their tickets.
