Hear Peter Gabriel’s Reflective New Song “Till Your Mind Is Shining”

Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel has unveiled a new track titled “Till Your Mind Is Shining,” offering fans another glimpse into his upcoming album o/i. The song continues Gabriel’s recent approach of releasing music gradually, with each track arriving in sync with the lunar cycle — the same strategy he used for his previous album i/o.

The new single stands out within the project because Gabriel himself describes it as the most accessible track on the record. In his own words, it is “the closest I get to a pop song on this record.”

The song began with a simple musical idea. Gabriel explained that everything started from a chord progression he found playful and catchy. He kept experimenting with the sequence until it evolved into a fully realized track. For Gabriel, the process brought him back to the earliest days of his musical journey — long before global fame, when he and his friends were trying to write straightforward pop and soul songs.

That nostalgic connection to his roots helped shape the final sound of the track. While Gabriel is known for complex, atmospheric compositions, “Till Your Mind Is Shining” carries a lighter tone compared with much of his recent material. Its melodic structure and upbeat feeling reflect the influences that first inspired him to pursue songwriting decades ago.

Yet beneath the accessible surface lies a deeper message. Gabriel has long been fascinated with the nature of consciousness and the ways humans attempt to understand their own minds. The new song explores that theme, encouraging listeners to look inward and become more aware of themselves and the world around them. The idea, Gabriel suggests, is that deeper understanding might lead people to act with greater responsibility and compassion.

Like many of Gabriel’s projects, the track took time to develop. He often begins writing songs years before they are completed, leaving them aside until they feel alive again. Once he returned to this one, he said the recording process became particularly enjoyable, with strong performances from the musicians involved.

“Till Your Mind Is Shining” also continues Gabriel’s recent production approach of releasing multiple versions of the same song. The first version shared with listeners is the “dark-side mix,” created by producer Tchad Blake, while a “bright-side mix” prepared by Mark “Spike” Stent is expected to follow later.

The visual side of the release is equally thoughtful. Each song from o/i features its own piece of artwork, and this one highlights a work by Japanese contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima. Gabriel chose the piece partly because of its futuristic aesthetic — combining numbers, data, and human imagery — which mirrors the song’s theme of balancing inner awareness with the technological world humans are building.

Gabriel also connected the artwork to his experiences visiting Hiroshima and speaking with survivors of the atomic bombing. Those conversations left a deep impression on him, reinforcing the importance of remembering history while striving for a more compassionate future.

With o/i still unfolding song by song, “Till Your Mind Is Shining” adds another reflective chapter to the project. The track blends Gabriel’s signature introspection with a rare pop sensibility, reminding listeners that even after decades in music, he continues exploring new ways to connect melody, philosophy, and emotion.
