Stevie Nicks recently shared her thoughts on Lindsey Buckingham’s departure from Fleetwood Mac, revealing the pivotal moment that made her realize she no longer wanted to be in a band with the guitarist.
Buckingham was dismissed from the group in 2018, 44 years after he and Nicks joined forces in 1974. Initially, reports suggested that “a disagreement over the band’s upcoming tour” led to a rift within Fleetwood Mac, as noted by Louder. However, Nicks’ recent interview with Rolling Stone sheds new light on the situation, tracing it back to a 2018 MusiCares concert.
Reflecting on that night, Nicks recalled, “I think that all just happened the way it should have.” She explained that the decision crystallized during the MusiCares benefit concert when she realized she didn’t want to share the stage with Buckingham any longer.
“I didn’t even tell anybody it had happened in my head until the whole ceremony was over,” she said. Nicks had intended to perform a song she had collaborated on with LeAnn Rimes, titled “Borrowed,” believing they could create something beautiful together.
However, she described Buckingham as “not very nice to anybody” that night, even to Harry Styles. In that moment, Nicks could hear her mother’s voice asking, “Are you really going to spend the next 15 years of your life with this man?”
She also recalled her father’s practical advice, suggesting, “It’s time for you guys to get a divorce.” With those thoughts resonating in her mind, Nicks ultimately decided, “I’m done.”
