Kurt Cobain’s Ingrained Hatred For Genesis’ Phil Collins

Phil Collins

Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was not afraid to voice his thoughts, even if they were controversial to some. This was relevant to Cobain’s opinions about various musicians in the business. For instance, the frontman expressed his distaste for Genesis’ Phil Collins in a 1992 interview with Melody Maker.

Kurt acknowledged that while he enjoyed many aspects of rock music, he listed a few things he would prefer not to have, including frontman Collins of Genesis.

Regarding Phil Collins, Cobain said the following: What do I detest most about rock music? Horns and cartoons. I hate Phil Collins for everything, even his masculine soul.

The frontman of Nirvana seems likely to feel a strong dislike for Collins, as evidenced by his subsequent remarks, which said:

“Like you, I hate tie-dyed t-shirts. Do you know that Nirvana has bootleg tie-dyed t-shirts? I hate that. If a t-shirt was tie-dyed using Jerry Garcia’s blood and Phil Collins’ urine, I wouldn’t wear it.

Kurt has strong negative feelings for other musicians besides Phil Collins, who was well-known for his feud with Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses. Over the years, in a number of interviews, the two musicians had expressed their distaste for each other and their bands.

When Rose made remarks to Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love, and their child backstage at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, tensions between the rock stars erupted. This is how Kurt remembered the incident that took place:

“You know, my spouse and I were at the MTV Music Awards yesterday, sitting in a tent. When Axl Rose passed by, we yelled at him, asking him if he would be our child’s godfather. He turned around, stopped, and pointed at me while carrying twenty bodyguards. I was also holding a small, defenceless child at the time.

Kurt continued his account of the events that happened backstage, adding:

That’s why he told my wife to shut up, bitch. Please don’t make me do anything tonight. “You better keep your wife shut or I’m going to take you to the pavement,” he said, glancing at me. I was trembling and thought, “What?” How do you intend to proceed? Beat me up, please? “You better keep your wife’s mouth shut,” he continued. You make your wife and everyone else feel embarrassed. I commanded my spouse to “shut up bitch!”
