“Left me in a Really Dark place”: Dave Grohl Says He Wanted to Disappear After Kurt Cobain’s Death

Dave Grohl has opened up about the emotional collapse he felt after Kurt Cobain’s death, revealing that there was a time when he did not know whether he wanted to keep making music at all. In a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Foo Fighters frontman said the end of Nirvana left him in a “really dark, emotional experience,” and he briefly pulled away from the life he had built around music.

Grohl explained that after Nirvana ended in 1994, he was uncertain about everything that came next. Cobain’s death by suicide at age 27 brought the band to an abrupt end, and Grohl said the grief made even the idea of playing in another band feel painful. He said he was unsure what to do with himself and that losing Nirvana and losing Cobain made him want to disappear.

That low point eventually led to one of the most important moments in his post-Nirvana life. Grohl said he rented a car and drove through Ireland’s Ring of Kerry trying to clear his head. While on the road, he saw a hitchhiker wearing a Kurt Cobain T-shirt, and he interpreted it as a message to keep moving forward. He described the encounter as a sign from the universe that he had to continue, go forward, and build a future for himself.

That moment became part of the path toward Foo Fighters, the band Grohl formed after Nirvana’s split. The group released its first album in 1995 and has since become one of the defining rock acts of the last three decades. In the recent interview, Grohl said music had always been the love of his life and that it helped him through difficult moments, which made the decision to keep going feel both personal and necessary.

Grohl has also spoken before about how his relationship with Nirvana’s music changed over time. In his 2021 memoir The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music, he said he used to change the station when Nirvana songs came on, but that he no longer reacts that way. He said he now listens with his children and still thinks about Cobain often, even saying he dreamt about him just two nights before that interview.

The reflection arrives as Foo Fighters continue moving forward with new music and touring. People reported that the band recently released its 12th studio album and has a global tour scheduled across 2026 and into early 2027. For Grohl, the message in the story is simple: the past still matters, but he chose to keep going.
