Mike Shinoda recently shared his first impression of Linkin Park’s new vocalist, Emily Armstrong, sparking excitement and controversy within the band’s fan base.
Following the announcement of their reunion, the band has faced scrutiny, especially with statements from Chester Bennington’s family members complicating their return.
In an interview with BBC Radio 1’s New Music Show, Shinoda reflected on Armstrong’s powerful vocals, which he first heard in the song “Weatherman” by her former band, Dead Sara.
He was struck by the raw passion in her voice, noting, “Her singing, just the way she approaches it, the passion was the driver… it was the vehicle that got it out of her system. And I always love that.”
Looking ahead, Shinoda emphasized that the upcoming album, set to release in the second week of November, marks a new chapter for Linkin Park.
“This is not meant to be a redo or a rewrite of Linkin Park,” he clarified. “The old chapter was a great chapter, and we love that chapter. But that ran its course.”
With a fresh start, Shinoda explained the challenge of working with a new voice.
He praised Armstrong for her authenticity, stating, “She’s a hundred percent her. She’s not trying to be Chester or anybody else. She’s her, and that’s why it works.”
