Massive Attack have spoken out after their Primavera Sound Barcelona 2026 headline set was cancelled because of severe weather. The festival’s opening day on June 4 was hit by heavy rain and strong winds, which caused the cancellation of most of the night’s headline performances.
According to the band’s statement, they were “devastated” that the show did not happen and said they had been “really excited” to perform after earlier disappointments. Massive Attack also said the Primavera bill, the spirit of the region, and the public solidarity with the Palestinian cause made the appearance especially meaningful to them.
The situation became more chaotic because the festival had initially told fans that Massive Attack’s set would still go ahead, even after Alex G and Mac DeMarco were already pulled from the night’s schedule. Some fans left the grounds and then returned when the band’s headline slot was said to be safe, only for the performance to be cancelled anyway.
In their statement, Massive Attack said they had accepted the Primavera invitation last September, prepared a new version of the show, and even brought in special guests to make the performance memorable. They added that no one can control severe weather, but safety for the audience, staff, crew, and artists had to come first. The band also said they waited “for as long as we possibly could” before the cancellation became unavoidable.
The group closed their message by saying their biggest frustration was not being able to speak directly to fans while everything was unfolding. They apologized and said they hoped to return in the future. Festival organizers later acknowledged the disappointment and said refund details for Thursday day-ticket holders would follow, while weekend pass holders were not initially being offered partial refunds.
