Soundgarden are working on their final album using posthumous vocals from Chris Cornell. The band had recorded demos with Cornell in 2015 and 2016, and some rough rehearsal tracks in 2017. Now the surviving members—Matt Cameron, Kim Thayil, and Ben Shepherd—are building full instrumental arrangements around those demos.
Drummer Matt Cameron recently confirmed they’re over halfway through completing the album. Guitarist Kim Thayil is carefully finishing his guitar parts, making sure everything fits just right. Despite the progress, there is no confirmed release date yet.
The album project faced delays because of legal issues with Cornell’s estate, but those have been resolved, giving the band access to the demo materials they needed. Working without Cornell present has been emotional for the group. Cameron called the experience both “empowering” and “gut-wrenching” to hear Cornell’s voice “soloed up” in the mixes.
Even so, Soundgarden are committed to doing this properly—holding off on releasing anything until the album is fully finished. When it does arrive, it will stand as a tribute and a final chapter for Chris Cornell and the band’s legacy.
