Neil Young Says Frustration with Trump Is Fueling His New Album

Legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young has revealed that he is currently working on a brand-new album, and the early stages of the project are already well underway.

In a message posted on his Neil Young Archives website, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame icon shared that he is back in the studio with his backing band The Chrome Hearts, where they have already recorded eight new songs.

Young explained that creating music again has been a powerful emotional outlet during what he describes as a troubling moment in American politics.

“Now, thankfully, once again, I’m in the studio recording a new album with the Chrome Hearts,” Young wrote.

“I love the songs and the feelings of life and love. Music is. So far, we have eight new songs. They make me feel.”

Although no release date or album title has been announced, the fact that multiple songs have already been tracked suggests the next chapter of Neil Young’s long recording career may arrive sooner rather than later.

Political Frustration Driving the Music

Alongside the studio update, Young did not hold back about the current political climate in the United States.

The outspoken musician directly criticized former U.S. president Donald Trump, describing the current political atmosphere as exhausting and deeply discouraging.

“Folks, I am so hurt for this country. Politics today is sad and depressing for me,” Young wrote.

“We have the worst president in the history of our country. Every day, a bad TV show produced by DJT is what we get.”

Despite his frustration, Young explained that music remains his most powerful way of responding to the world around him. While he believes in speaking out publicly, songwriting allows him to process events and channel emotion into art.

A Band Built for a New Era

Young has been collaborating with The Chrome Hearts since 2024. The group includes a lineup of seasoned musicians, including guitarist Micah Nelson, bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony LoGerfo, and legendary keyboardist Spooner Oldham.

Several members previously played in Promise of the Real, a band led by Nelson’s brother Lukas Nelson, which also served as Young’s backing group during much of the 2010s.

The collaboration between Young and the Chrome Hearts already produced the 2025 album Talkin to the Trees, marking the first official studio project with the band.

That record featured politically charged songs and environmental themes, continuing Young’s long tradition of blending rock music with activism.

Protest Music Has Always Been Part of Neil Young’s Legacy

Young has never shied away from politics throughout his decades-long career.

Over the years he has used music to comment on war, environmental issues, and government leadership. His more recent work with the Chrome Hearts continues that tradition, including the protest song “Big Crime,” which criticizes political leadership in Washington, D.C. and calls out authoritarian tendencies.

The song’s lyrics include pointed lines about “fascist rules” and corruption in government, reflecting Young’s ongoing commitment to politically charged songwriting.

What Comes Next

At the moment, details about the upcoming album remain limited. Young has not revealed a title, tracklist, or expected release date.

However, with eight songs already recorded, the project appears to be moving quickly.

For fans of Neil Young, that means another album shaped by the artist’s raw honesty and his response to the world around him — a tradition that has defined his music for more than five decades.

As Young himself hinted, the songs are already speaking to him emotionally — and soon, they may do the same for listeners everywhere.
