Journey guitarist Neal Schon has responded to recent comments from the band’s singer Arnel Pineda after reports surfaced that the frontman had considered stepping away from the group before their current farewell tour began.
The controversy began after interviews revealed that Pineda had serious doubts about joining the band’s ongoing Final Frontier farewell tour. According to the singer, he struggled with personal issues and the pressures of touring, and at one point even reached out to the band to express that he might want to step away. Pineda later said that his attempts to communicate his concerns felt like they were met with silence, leaving him with the feeling that he had little choice but to continue with the tour once plans were already underway.
Schon quickly addressed the situation publicly after media coverage suggested that Pineda had been pressured into participating in the tour. The guitarist pushed back against that interpretation, arguing that the situation was more complicated than it had been portrayed.
“There’s been some recent press and speculation that doesn’t reflect the full picture,” Schon explained in a message responding to the reports. “Touring at this level involves many moving parts, and decisions are made collectively with our team, including management, agents and promoters.”
The guitarist also emphasized that no one in the band had prevented Pineda from making his own decisions. According to Schon, the reality of a major tour involves contractual commitments and agreements that are arranged long before the shows begin.
“For clarity, no one was ever prevented by me from making their own personal decisions,” he said, adding that the band had been advised by their representatives that touring commitments carried legal obligations that needed to be honored.
Despite the confusion surrounding the situation, Schon made it clear that he still appreciates Pineda’s role in the band and the contributions he brings to the stage. He described the challenges of a long-running group where different members can experience the pressures of touring in different ways.
“Like any long-running band, there are moments where people feel the pressure differently,” Schon said. “I respect that, and I have nothing but appreciation for what everyone brings to the stage.”
Pineda has been the voice of Journey since 2007, when Schon famously discovered the Filipino singer on YouTube performing covers of the band’s songs. The unlikely discovery revitalized the group and led to a successful new chapter in Journey’s history, with Pineda fronting the band on tours and recordings for nearly two decades.
Today’s lineup of Journey includes Schon on guitar, Pineda on vocals, Jonathan Cain on keyboards, along with drummer Deen Castronovo, bassist Todd Jensen and keyboardist Jason Derlatka.
The band is currently traveling across North America on the Final Frontier tour, which was announced as a massive farewell run celebrating more than fifty years of Journey’s music. The shows are designed as an “evening with” experience, featuring two full sets of material that dive deep into the band’s catalog while still delivering the classic hits that defined their arena-rock legacy.
For Schon, the main focus remains on honoring the band’s music and giving fans the best possible experience, regardless of the behind-the-scenes complications that sometimes come with keeping a legendary rock band together for decades.
“My focus has always been — and remains — delivering the best possible experience for our fans and keeping the music alive,” Schon said.
With Journey’s farewell tour now underway, the band continues to perform across the United States while navigating the realities of a group whose members have spent more than half a century on the road together.
