Noel Gallagher names most awful rock band of all time

At the height of Oasis’ success, Noel Gallagher boldly declared, “We’re not arrogant. We just think we’re the best band in the world.”

With this mindset, it’s not surprising that he thinks other bands are beneath him. Gallagher’s commentary, combined with his infamous prickly demeanour and a talent for backhanded compliments rivalling a pre-caffeinated Simon Cowell, creates a potent cocktail of scathing criticism.

He’s criticised Blur, dismissed Coldplay, and declared that Harry Styles has made no significant contribution to the music industry.

However, he maintained a distinct level of contempt for one band in particular. Gallagher went so far as to say that he considers himself fortunate to be alive at a time when he can confidently claim to have witnessed the absolute nadir of musical talent.

In his trademark biting style, Gallagher quipped: “Do you ever look at the sky and think, ‘I’m glad I’m alive.’? After hearing System of a Down, I realised I had the dubious distinction of hearing the worst band of all time. It’s quite remarkable, given the countless bands that have existed in the past and will continue to exist. Yet, here I am, living in the worst of times.”

Furthermore, System of a Down and Oasis both formed in 1994. While Oasis revelled in their irreverent weekend festivities, these moustachioed American rockers were casting a critical eye on the mechanical grind of modern life.

Their approach, while occasionally questionable, was undeniably unique.

Many have enjoyed headbanging to ‘Toxicity‘ at indie gatherings. Gallagher’s critique of lead singer Serj Tankian’s poetic attempts resonates with some.

Tankian’s anthology contains lines such as “I feel I’ve become the victim of countless manipulations…”. In the name of business, art, music, freedom, nationalism, and other meaningless jargon.”

With no rhyme, rhythm, or metre, it’s difficult to classify it as poetry.

Given Gallagher’s outspoken dislike for pretence, it’s not surprising that he finds Tankian’s existential musings difficult to accept.

Whether you like System of a Down or agree with Gallagher’s disdain, there’s something admirable about his creative expression of hatred.

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect, and few have mastered the art of the insult like Noel Gallagher.
