Dave Mustaine isn’t planning a conventional farewell for Megadeth — he wants their last-ever concert to be somewhere absolutely out of this world.
In a recent interview with Metal Hammer (reported by Ultimate Guitar), Mustaine said he hopes that Megadeth’s final show will be “playing up in space.” He didn’t mean a simulcast or a projected hologram — he’s envisioning a gig on the Moon:
“I think that will be a really fitting climax. … A gig on the Moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool.”
He explained that after seeing celebrities go to space — like Star Trek’s William Shatner — he thought, “Well, if them, why not me?” Mustaine added that he’s following the progress of space travel closely, pointing to efforts from Elon Musk and Richard Branson. He said:
“I think people are going to be travelling to space a lot sooner than you think.”
When asked if he’s serious, he doubled down — noting that people already fly above 40,000 feet, which he argues is “basically already in space.” He also wondered aloud whether humans could one day inhabit the Moon. “The question is, are people going to be able to inhabit the moon?” he said.
Still, Mustaine made it clear: even if there’s a trip to Mars one day, he wouldn’t want to stay away from Earth. He joked, “People were talking about a trip to Mars … but all I can imagine is somebody suddenly going, ‘Oh! I forgot my toothbrush!’”
Megadeth is set to release their 17th and final studio album in January 2026, and then embark on a global “farewell” tour.
Mustaine told Kerrang! that he expects the farewell tour to last “three to five years.”
As part of their final chapter, Megadeth is re-recording “Ride the Lightning” (originally co-written by Mustaine when he was in Metallica) for a proper tribute. Mustaine has said he wants Megadeth to end “on his own terms, on top,” and he’s framing this farewell as both a celebration and a grand finale.
