Phil Collins has offered a hopeful new update on his health, and while he is not promising a comeback, he has made it clear that the idea of returning to the stage is no longer completely off the table. In a new interview with BBC Breakfast on May 22, the Genesis legend said he is feeling better than he has in quite some time, a notable shift after years of difficult health issues.
The update matters because Collins has spent years dealing with the fallout from a 2007 spinal injury, as well as repeated knee problems that severely affected his mobility. At Genesis’ final shows in 2022, he performed from a chair while his son Nic Collins handled the drums, a reminder of just how much his physical condition had changed over time. In January, Collins also revealed that he had a 24-hour live-in nurse to help manage his medication and care.
Even with that history, Collins said he is healthier now than he has been “for quite a while.” That was the clearest sign yet that his condition has improved enough for him to at least imagine the possibility of doing something musical again someday. Still, he was careful not to oversell it. When asked about a future live return, he said he could “contemplate” it, but did not sound certain that a full tour is realistic.
One thing Collins has already ruled out is a performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony later this year. He explained that he was asked to perform and said no, because he would need to be fully prepared and in proper shape to do a show like that. He said rehearsal would be essential, and if he had not been singing regularly, his voice would not be ready. In short, he felt it was better not to do it than to risk delivering something below his standard.
That caution makes sense given the seriousness of his past health problems. Collins has said he underwent five knee operations, can walk only with assistance, and has had multiple other medical complications over the years. His January comments were especially stark, when he admitted that he had been very sick and was no longer driven in the same way to return to the studio. The latest update feels more encouraging because it shows that, even after all that, the spark has not disappeared completely.
Collins also hinted that creativity is still in the background. He said he keeps telling himself he should go back down to the studio at home, and added that he has “lots of lyrical ideas,” including some unfinished pieces and a couple of songs that are already in more developed form. That means while a new album is not officially planned, he is still carrying material with him that could one day become something more.
The timing of this update comes shortly after Collins made a rare public appearance in London for the 50th anniversary celebration of The King’s Trust at Buckingham Palace. He attended with his ex-wife Jill Tavelman, and the outing marked one of his few recent appearances after years of staying out of the spotlight because of his health.
Collins was also said to be surprised to learn he had been inducted into the Rock Hall as a solo artist, especially since Genesis were already inducted in 2010. In a separate interview earlier this month, he said he had not expected the honor but felt flattered and pleased to be included. That makes his decision not to perform at the ceremony even more telling: he is grateful, but also very realistic about what his body can and cannot handle.
For now, the story is not about a full comeback. It is about a musician who has been through years of physical setbacks, has earned the right to be cautious, and is still leaving just enough hope on the table to keep fans listening. Phil Collins is not announcing a tour, but he is no longer closing the door on one either.
