Shania Twain is officially headed to the big screen. On June 3, 2026, reports confirmed that Sony Pictures has reached an agreement with writer-director Leah McKendrick to make Shania, a biopic about Twain’s life and career. Twain is attached to produce the film, and the project is being handled as a major music-biopic feature centered on the country-pop icon’s rise to global fame.

McKendrick said the project is deeply personal to her, writing on Instagram that she used to shoot Shania music videos in her bedroom long before she became a filmmaker. She called Twain a “wild-hearted force” and said it is a dream to bring her “trailblazing” story to the screen. Twain appeared to endorse the project by reacting with a heart emoji.

Plot details are still being kept quiet, but the film is expected to cover Twain’s journey from Windsor, Ontario, to becoming one of the biggest country-pop stars in the world. People’s report says the story will likely draw from the hits and turning points that defined her career, while McKendrick’s own background as a former singer-songwriter reportedly helped land her the job.

The project comes as Twain remains active creatively, with her seventh studio album Little Miss Twain due July 24, 2026. McKendrick’s next film, Voicemails for Isabelle, is set to arrive on Netflix on June 19, 2026.
