The best Rock + Metal Moments That Happened at Coachella 2026’s Opening Weekend

The 2026 edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival delivered one of the most diverse weekends in the festival’s history. While the event is often dominated by pop and electronic music, this year featured a surprising mix of rock legends, pop superstars, and alternative acts creating headline-grabbing moments across the stages in Indio, California.

One of the biggest talking points of the weekend came from Justin Bieber, who headlined the festival for the first time. His set on April 11 mixed songs from his recent albums Swag and Swag II with nostalgic throwbacks that revisited the early days of his career. In a unique segment, Bieber played clips from his old YouTube videos while performing along with hits like “Baby,” “Favorite Girl,” and “Never Say Never.” The performance also included guest appearances from artists including The Kid LAROI, Tems, Wizkid, and Dijon, making it one of the most widely discussed shows of the weekend.

Another memorable moment came from punk icon Iggy Pop. At nearly 79 years old, the legendary performer proved he still had plenty of energy, delivering a wild performance that ended with him dramatically leaving the stage inside a black coffin — a theatrical exit that instantly went viral across social media.

Industrial rock also had a major presence with the debut performance of Nine Inch Noize, the collaborative project involving Trent Reznor and electronic producer Boys Noize. The set featured remixed versions of classic Nine Inch Nails material, with vocalist Mariqueen Maandig joining on several songs while eerie dancers and projections created one of the festival’s most visually striking performances.
