The Cure are on a serious creative roll. Following the massive success of 2024’s Songs Of A Lost World — their first album in 16 years — Robert Smith has revealed plans for not one, but two new Cure albums already in the works.
In a new BBC 6 Music interview, Smith confirmed that the band recorded three albums’ worth of material back in 2019. The second album is finished and about to be delivered to Universal. According to Smith, this next release will lean even deeper into darkness:
“What we’ve been putting out in the last couple of years, it’s really rockin’, it’s bangin’. But the next one, if anything, it’s more dismal than Songs Of A Lost World. I mean, ‘dismal,’ that’s a horrible word to use! But it’s quite dark emotionally. It’s related to Songs Of A Lost World, but it’s a different perspective on things.”
Right after that darker album, The Cure will release a completely different record — one that’s really poppy:
“The third one is really, really upbeat. It’s really poppy. But it doesn’t compare melodically to the stuff that Olivia [Rodrigo] does. It’s more my idea of Cure pop. It’s probably 20 BPM slower than anything she does.”
This comes hot on the heels of The Cure’s recent festival headline performances at Primavera Sound and North Festival, where they played an array of classics and live rarities, and Smith’s surprise collaboration with Olivia Rodrigo on the song “what’s wrong with me.”
It’s classic Robert Smith — promising emotional extremes in true Cure fashion. The ability to swing from dark, atmospheric gloom to bright, catchy pop has always been one of the band’s greatest strengths. Fans who loved the melancholy of Songs Of A Lost World will get more of that soon, while those craving the lighter, hook-filled side of The Cure (think “Friday I’m in Love” or “Just Like Heaven”) have something exciting to look forward to as well. The Cure in 2026–2027 is shaping up to be a very interesting era.
