The greatest guitarist of all time, according to Jimmy Page

Jimmy Page

The debate surrounding the greatest guitarist of all time is, without a doubt, completely subjective. Public opinion may forever remain divided on the matter, but if there’s one person who can offer a definitive answer, it’s Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.

Before the formation of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page had already established himself as a prominent figure in London’s rock scene, although he had yet to attain widespread fame. During his time in art school, Page began frequenting an open mic night at a nearby venue. Before long, he became a highly sought-after session musician.

During this phase of his career, he gained valuable experience working alongside renowned musicians such as Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones. This period served as a valuable learning opportunity, which ultimately contributed to his success with The Yardbirds.

Page possesses a deep understanding of the elements required to achieve legendary status, from a technical perspective. Although frequently mentioned in discussions about the greatest guitarist of all time, Page firmly believes that Jimi Hendrix deserves that title.

Jimmy Page played a prominent role in the London rock scene during Hendrix’s initial arrival in the United Kingdom in 1966. In just a few months, the American became the talk of the town, surpassing the popularity of the English capital in no time.

When Eric Clapton’s band Cream was at the peak of their success in London, Hendrix saw an opportunity to shine and took full advantage of it.

Hendrix’s iconic debut on British soil took place at the London Polytechnic during a Cream concert. The room was buzzing with aspiring legends. They were all amazed when Hendrix unexpectedly graced the stage and delivered a mind-blowing rendition of the iconic Howlin’ Wolf track ‘Killing Floor’.

That night witnessed the birth of a true star, leaving an indelible mark on Page’s mind. No one has even come close to matching his awe-inspiring brilliance. “Hendrix was truly the greatest guitarist we ever had,” the members of Led Zeppelin once expressed to Rolling Stone’s Cameron Crowe.

Regrettably for Page, he was not present at the London Polytechnic that evening to witness the historic event. This made him seemingly the sole musician in the capital who did not attend Hendrix’s grand unveiling. However, Page quickly received news of the enchanting display from friends.

Despite his strong desire to experience a Hendrix concert, fate never allowed it to become a reality for Page. Tragically, he never had the opportunity to meet the legendary musician before his untimely passing.

“It wasn’t due to a lack of determination,” the guitarist of Led Zeppelin shared with Rolling Stone in 2012. I longed to catch a glimpse of him. However, I had the opportunity to participate in studio dates and go on tour with the Yardbirds. Jeff came over and excitedly shared a story with me. He recounted how a talented musician unexpectedly wowed the crowd at London Polytechnic. I recall being in London after a Zeppelin tour, eagerly anticipating Hendrix’s performance at the Royal Albert Hall the following night.

He enthusiastically exclaimed: “I was completely exhausted and thought, ‘I want to see him.’ However, I had been regaled with countless tales of his captivating performances at various clubs. I thought to myself, “I’ll have to catch him the next time he’s around.” There wouldn’t be another opportunity for me.

Interestingly, despite never engaging in conversation or sharing musical exchanges, Page had a chance to speak with Hendrix. Unfortunately, due to the timing not being ideal, Page had to reluctantly let go of an incredible opportunity.

The guitarist shared: “I only caught a glimpse of him at a club called Salvation in New York.” He was on the other side of the room while I was sitting with some friends. I had planned to apologize for not attending the concert in London. Afterward, he departed alongside the individuals in his company. And he appeared slightly disheveled. I thought, ‘There will be a better opportunity.‘ Ultimately, there was none.

Even though his life was tragically cut short in 1970, Hendrix left behind a remarkable legacy that still serves as a source of inspiration for artists today. Hendrix’s discography comprises only three studio albums. Yet, the profound influence of his work far surpasses that of numerous artists who have recorded significantly more material. There are still lingering questions about what might have happened if Hendrix’s life hadn’t been tragically cut short. However, his reputation speaks volumes, especially with the high praise he received from influential figures like Page.

Over time, it becomes clear that no one can rival his exceptional talent. On a technical level, numerous guitar virtuosos have demonstrated their ability to achieve remarkable feats. Jimi Hendrix injected his music with an unparalleled level of rockstar energy, crafting a unique experience that remains unmatched.
