The Stevie Nicks song she wrote in tribute to Tom Petty

Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks has consistently incorporated the genuine individuals from her life into her music. While numerous artists have a knack for using metaphors in their songs, likely, many of the individuals mentioned in Nicks’s extensive collection of songs are real people with ordinary lives. These individuals either hold a special place in her heart or have managed to deeply upset her. In addition to her other works that criticize Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac, she penned ‘Hard Advice‘. It serves as a heartfelt tribute to Tom Petty.

Throughout their careers, Petty and Nicks consistently shared the same creative sphere. Petty’s supportive, brotherly presence in Nicks’s life remained unmarred by romantic rumors surrounding them. His influence ultimately inspired Nicks to embark on her first solo venture, resulting in the creation of her debut album, Bella Donna.

When Nicks began to lose interest in Fleetwood Mac, she even contemplated the possibility of joining The Heartbreakers. She was always more inclined towards being a solo artist. Even her fellow Heartbreakers such as Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench were more than willing to assist her on numerous solo projects.

The intense impact of Fleetwood Mac’s music can take a toll on anyone’s emotions, and Nicks found herself struggling with a serious drug addiction. After attempting to overcome her struggles independently for several years, Nicks eventually sought help and entered rehab in the 1990s. This marked a significant turning point for her, as she experienced a newfound clarity of mind that had eluded her since the 1970s. There was only one issue…what if she came back and lost her ability to write songs?

Although Nicks had Petty as a reliable source of support, one of the most valuable lessons he taught her was the power of saying no. When she approached him with requests to collaborate on various projects, Petty believed it was important. He thought she should disconnect from external influences and reconnect with her true identity as a songwriter.

Following their meeting, Nicks penned the song ‘Hard Advice‘ inspired by their shared experiences. In an interview with Rolling Stone, she reminisced, “I had this sense that he would eagerly anticipate its release.” It ended up being coated in 24 Karat Gold. The chorus states, ‘At times, he is my closest companion.’ Tom is sometimes my best friend. I modified it as I was aware that Tom would prefer not to have his name mentioned. That’s the depth of my familiarity with him.

Despite Stevie Nicks ‘ evident pain from rehab and a recent breakup, this song suggests that she has begun to discover a sense of serenity. Even without Petty’s support, she refused to give up on her dreams of becoming a rock and roll powerhouse.

Nicks has always maintained her initial enthusiasm for Petty’s music. Until his passing, Nicks frequently joined Petty on stage. She lent her vocals to songs like ‘Insider‘ and performed her hit ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around’ alongside him. With a collection of beautiful love songs under her belt, ‘Hard Advice’ stands out. It’s a unique and cherished platonic love affair that holds immense value.
