Audioslave fans hoping for long-lost music with Chris Cornell are getting a reality check: Tom Morello says the band still has unreleased material in the vault, but nothing is close to coming out. Morello recently explained that the group has “probably like an album’s worth” of songs left over from its three studio records, but added that there is still “no plan” in place to actually release them.

Morello said the unreleased tracks came from all three Audioslave sessions, and described some of them as “really great.” He also made clear that the delay is not about quality or a lack of interest, but simply that the surviving band members have not gotten everything organized. “There’s no plan to not put it out,” he said, adding that he would love to see the music reach listeners one day.

The update will sting for fans of the hard-rock supergroup, which paired Cornell with three members of Rage Against the Machine and released three albums during its 2001-2007 run. Audioslave briefly reunited for a performance in January 2017, just months before Cornell’s death later that year. Since then, talk of unreleased Cornell-era material has continued to surface, but without a concrete timeline.

There may still be reason for cautious optimism, though. Consequence reports that Morello remains open to a future release, and the wider Cornell catalog has continued to generate posthumous interest, including renewed attention around Soundgarden material and other archival projects. For now, though, the message is simple: the songs exist, but the wait is still on.
