“Too Big for Other Bands”: Glenn Frey on the Eagles Song No Band Could Match

Every musician starts by imitating their heroes, but true greatness comes from making something uniquely your own.

Glenn Frey had already crafted countless hits with the Eagles, but when it came to one of their most emotional ballads, he was convinced—no other band could ever match what they had created.

The Eagles were known for their harmonies, but some of their most powerful moments came in their softer songs. Tracks like Desperado and Best of My Love became timeless classics, showcasing the band’s ability to capture heartbreak like no one else. And as they crafted Hotel California, Frey knew they were making something truly special.

Among the album’s unforgettable tracks, Wasted Time stood out. A deeply personal reflection from Don Henley on lost love, the song took the Eagles beyond their country-rock roots.

Instead of leaning into their signature folk influences, Frey wanted something different—a lush, orchestral arrangement inspired by the Philadelphia soul records he had adored in his youth.

With sweeping strings and a grand production, Wasted Time even got its own instrumental reprise at the start of the album’s second side. But no matter how well the music was arranged, Frey believed the real magic came from Henley’s voice.

Speaking in The Very Best of the Eagles, he reflected, “We did a big Philly-type production with strings—definitely not country rock. You’re not going to find that track on a Crosby, Stills & Nash record or a Beach Boys record.

Don’s singing abilities stretched so many of our boundaries. He could sing the phone book. It didn’t matter. We had Golden Throat.”

Frey knew the Eagles’ signature sound relied on their harmonies, but when Henley took the lead, everything changed.

Looking back in History of the Eagles, Frey admitted, “I sang less and less. It was intentional…we had Don Henley.”

And when the song swelled into its final moments, with Frey, Joe Walsh, and Randy Meisner’s harmonies soaring behind Henley, it was proof that no other band could replicate what the Eagles had.

For many bands, the magic lies in their instruments—the crunch of a guitar, the thunder of drums. But for the Eagles, their greatest weapon was their voices. And when they poured everything into Wasted Time, Frey was sure—this was one song no other band could touch.
