Jack White, the former frontman of The White Stripes, has waded into political controversy once more, this time over the Trump administration’s lavish White House makeover.
On Instagram, White unleashed a scathing critique of the newly redecorated Oval Office, describing it as “vulgar, gold-leafed and gaudy, a professional wrestler’s dressing room.” He went on to mock the excess, speculating—tongue in cheek—that a UFC match on the White House lawn wouldn’t be out of place, and wondered aloud if he’d trust the nuclear codes to someone who decorates like that. He even joked about a hypothetical gold-plated “Trump Bible” on the mantle.
The White House didn’t hold back in response. Communications Director Steven Cheung fired back at White, calling him a “washed-up, has-been loser posting drivel on social media” and said the musician “fails to appreciate, and quite frankly disrespects, the splendor and significance of the Oval Office.”
White didn’t let it slide. In a fiery Instagram gallery post, he embraced the White House insult—“masquerading as a real artist? Thank you for giving me my tombstone engraving!”—and turned the criticism back on the administration. He labeled Trump a “low-life fascist,” “orange grifter,” and “professional golf cheat,” and accused him of far more serious issues—from dismantling democratic norms to enabling hate and authoritarianism.
Despite the White House’s attempt to paint him as irrelevant, Jack White remains as visible as ever. His most recent album was nominated for a Grammy, and he’s slated to perform at the upcoming CBGB Festival in Brooklyn alongside Iggy Pop and the Sex Pistols.
