Much speculation has surrounded the idea that Bon Scott may have contributed lyrics to AC/DC’s legendary album Back in Black, released just months after Scott’s tragic death.
A particular point of debate centers on the song “You Shook Me All Night Long.”
In an interview with Booked on Rock, Jesse Fink, author of Bon: The Last Highway, shared a story that could provide evidence that Scott had a hand in the lyrics. Fink pointed out a potential link to an earlier AC/DC song.
He recounted a story about a musician who posted on the AC/DC fan forum acdcfans.net, where Fink admits he’s not a frequent visitor due to his polarizing opinions there.
The musician shared an anecdote about recording an album in the early 1980s with Mark Dearnley, who had engineered Highway to Hell.
After a session, the musician asked Dearnley about the origins of “You Shook Me All Night Long.”
According to Dearnley, Bon Scott had first tried out some of the lyrics on the song “Love Hungry Man,” but they didn’t quite fit and were set aside for Back in Black.
Fink pointed to a lyrical connection between the two songs.
In “Love Hungry Man,” Scott sings, “All I wanna do is make a meal outta you,” while “You Shook Me All Night Long” includes the line, “Made a meal outta me and come back for more.”
The similarities in the lyrics suggest that Scott may have been involved in the early creation of the song.
Whether it’s just a coincidence or a subtle clue remains uncertain. However, Fink’s story adds another layer to the ongoing mystery of Scott’s potential influence on Back in Black.
