Watch Blake Shelton Honor Don Schlitz At ACM Awards With an Emotional Performance of “The Gambler”

Blake Shelton helped send the 2026 ACM Awards out on a high note with a performance that turned into one of the night’s most emotional moments. As the show wrapped in Las Vegas, Shelton stepped out to perform Kenny Rogers’ signature hit “The Gambler” in tribute to legendary songwriter Don Schlitz, who died in April at age 73 after a sudden illness. By the time Shelton reached the final chorus, the arena was fully locked in.

The performance honored the man who wrote “The Gambler” before it became one of Kenny Rogers’ most famous songs. First released in 1978, the track became a crossover smash, reaching No. 1 on the country chart and even climbing into the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Shelton delivered the song in a way that had fans and fellow artists singing along before the number was over.

There was also a full-circle element to Shelton’s tribute. He had previously recorded his own version of “The Gambler” back in 2006 while working with producer Bobby Braddock, and he had already released a new cover exclusively through Amazon Music ahead of the televised ACM performance. That made the tribute feel less like a one-off and more like a return to a song he has long had a connection to.

Schlitz’s legacy reaches far beyond one famous song. The Hall of Fame songwriter wrote 16 No. 1 country hits over the course of his career, including Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen” and Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing at All.” His catalog helped shape modern country music in a lasting way, and Shelton’s tribute served as a reminder of just how deep that influence runs.

Shelton, who is currently in the middle of his Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, helped close the ACM Awards with a performance that felt both celebratory and reverent. For a few minutes inside the arena, the night came together around a song almost everyone knew — and knew how to sing.
