Sammy Hagar feels jealous that his former Van Halen bandmate Michael Anthony played music with Billie Joe Armstrong.
Anthony shared a clip on Instagram from the night when he performed with Billie’s cover band The Coverups and wrote in the caption, “Had a great time Saturday night jammin’ at the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa with The Coverups! Keep an eye out for a couple more videos.”
How Did Sammy React To The Bassist’s Post?
Hagar left a comment under his post, writing, “I f*cking love it. This is awesome Mikey cheating on me out there having fun without me. Why do I auto?”
Armstrong also reacted to Anthony’s video, “Let’s do it again!! Your vocals are on another level!!”
Green Day’s singer also posted another video from their ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love’ performance and wrote on Instagram, “What a night!!! Getting to play with a hero! Michael Anthony!!! ‘Aint’t Talkin’ ’bout Love’!!!!”
Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe also left a comment under Armstrong’s video. The bassist said, “Yeah.”
Billie replied to him, “We’re next buddy!”
The Long-Lasting Friendship Between Sammy Hagar And Anthony
Besides Van Halen, Hagar, and Anthony also collaborated in Chickenfoot and Sammy Hagar and the Circle. In a 2019 chat with Ultimate Classic Rock, Sammy shared how they became such good friends by referring to their time in Van Halen and its aftermath:
“Back then, he and I didn’t know what good friends we were yet because we hadn’t gotten to know each other. He was the quiet guy in the band, and Ed and Al were doing all the yakking about ‘Hey, what do you want to do?’ Michael was just going along with the program, I didn’t pay much attention to him. But as years went by, I started realizing he was my kind of guy. As soon as we went to Cabo [San Lucas, where Van Halen started the Cabo Wabo nightclub; Hagar eventually bought out the rest of his bandmates], Mike got it.”
After leaving Van Halen, Anthony stayed while Hagar went solo. The Red Rocker focused on his solo career and didn’t initially think of taking Anthony with him. However, after some years, Hagar invited Anthony to join his band and play some Van Halen songs during their shows.
