Pete Townshend Teases Possible New Album From The Who: “Roger Wants to Give It a Try”

The possibility of a new album from The Who has resurfaced — and it comes from a surprising place.

In a recent fan interaction, Pete Townshend responded to skepticism about the band’s future with a short but significant statement: “You might be wrong. Roger wants to give it a try.”

The comment, referring to Roger Daltrey, immediately caught attention because it marks a clear shift from the band’s previously uncertain stance on recording new material.

For years, the future of new music from The Who has been unclear. Their last studio album, Who, was released in 2019 — their first in 13 years — and even that project came after a long period of hesitation about returning to the studio.

More importantly, the biggest obstacle has always been Daltrey himself.

In earlier interviews, Townshend openly admitted that he was interested in making another album, but didn’t believe Daltrey shared that enthusiasm. At one point, he stated bluntly that he didn’t think another Who album would happen because Daltrey wasn’t interested in recording again.

Daltrey also expressed doubts about the band’s future, suggesting that the chapter of making new music might already be over.

That’s why the new comment carries weight.

If Daltrey is now willing to “give it a try,” it represents a reversal of the dynamic that has held the band back for years. The Who, now essentially a duo of Townshend and Daltrey, have continued to tour and perform, but new studio work has remained uncertain.

Even in recent years, Townshend has hinted that the band would continue doing “something” together, whether through live shows or special projects, but stopped short of confirming new recordings.

At this stage, nothing is confirmed.

There is no official announcement, no recording timeline, and no indication that sessions have begun. The statement appears to reflect early conversations rather than a finalized plan.

But the significance lies in the shift itself.

For a band that has spent years caught between legacy and closure, the idea of returning to the studio — even tentatively — suggests that The Who may not be finished after all.
