Why Eddie Vedder Thinks This Farewell Show Is “Rock’s Greatest Ever”

Every band eventually faces the conversation about when to call it quits. Some artists bow out gracefully, while others push forward, determined to keep the music alive. Pearl Jam has shown no signs of slowing down, but Eddie Vedder has already set the standard for a perfect farewell—thanks to The Band’s legendary final performance, The Last Waltz.

Despite their status as one of the greatest Americana acts—ironically, while being mostly Canadian—The Band didn’t have to break up when they did. But when they decided to call it a day, they did it in style, inviting some of the biggest names in rock to share the stage. With Martin Scorsese behind the camera, The Last Waltz wasn’t just a concert—it was a celebration of a band that shaped generations.

Unlike many farewell tours that feel bittersweet, The Last Waltz captured a group of musicians reveling in their final moments together. Neil Young, Eric Clapton, and other legends joined in, not to steal the spotlight but to pay tribute. Clapton, in particular, was so enamored with The Band that he once considered ditching Cream just to play with them.

Vedder, known for his raw intensity on stage, admired the effortless camaraderie of The Last Waltz. Reflecting on Pearl Jam’s own longevity, he once said, “The Last Waltz is great, one of the greatest things ever, but it had that impact because it was the last gig.”

While Pearl Jam’s sound is far removed from The Band’s rustic Americana, Vedder’s solo work, like Ukulele Songs, hints at a softer side reminiscent of Robbie Robertson’s songwriting. With whispers that Pearl Jam only has a few albums left in them, could they be setting the stage for their own Last Waltz moment? If so, longtime friend Cameron Crowe seems like the obvious choice to document their final bow.

For now, though, Pearl Jam isn’t ready to say goodbye. Every new album is another step forward, and Vedder still has plenty left to give. But when the time does come, he knows exactly how to do it right.
