STRYPER’s MICHAEL SWEET Admits He’s ‘Not A Big METALLICA Fan’: ‘It’s Not What I Choose To Listen To’

Stryper frontman Michael Sweet has made it clear that while he respects Metallica’s place in metal history, the band has never been one of his personal go-to listens. In a recent interview with Mike “Radioactive MikeZ” Zara on 96.7 KCAL-FM’s Wired In The Empire, Sweet said Metallica’s success is undeniable, but their style has never really connected with him the way other heavy bands have.

Sweet said there is “no denying” what Metallica have accomplished, calling them one of the biggest metal bands ever and praising how they have built their brand and legacy. But he added that, for him personally, they are simply not the kind of band he chooses to listen to. He said Metallica “doesn’t do it” for him and that he would not usually put on a Metallica record or stream their music.

Instead, Sweet said he would rather listen to Judas Priest, and when it comes to heavier music, he actually finds himself reaching for Pantera more often than Metallica. He explained that Pantera’s guitar work pulled him in more strongly, especially the playing of Dimebag Darrell, which grabbed his attention in a way Metallica’s singing, lead guitar style, and drumming never quite did.

Sweet also acknowledged that his comments might frustrate some fans. He compared his Metallica stance to someone saying they were never really into Van Halen or The Beatles, meaning he understands why people might be shocked, even if his own taste just points somewhere else. He made a point of stressing that there was no disrespect intended, saying he has nothing but respect for what Metallica have achieved and the legendary status they still hold.

Asked whether any specific Metallica song stands out to him, Sweet admitted he had recently posted something online saying he could not name one Metallica song and caught a lot of backlash for it. He then softened the point a little, saying that if a Metallica song comes on, he can enjoy it in the moment, but he has never owned, bought, downloaded, or streamed a Metallica album or song himself.

This is not the first time Sweet has said something similar. In August 2024, when he was asked by Robert Cavuoto of Myglobalmind whether he had gone to see Metallica when they played in Massachusetts, Sweet gave a similar answer. He said he respects the band and understands why so many people love them, but he does not listen to them and would have trouble naming more than one or two songs.

That earlier interview also showed where his personal metal tastes really sit. Sweet said he gets more excited by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and even by Pantera’s energy in live settings. He also recalled having played with Metallica back when Dave Mustaine was still in the band, making it clear that his comments come from someone who knows the scene, not someone speaking from ignorance.

In the end, Sweet’s comments are less an attack on Metallica than a reminder that even legendary bands do not connect with every listener the same way. He is not denying their importance. He is simply saying that, for his own ears, other bands hit harder. And in heavy metal, that kind of honest preference is usually what starts the loudest conversation.
