The rock world was fundamentally reshaped when progressive rock titans Rush announced their monumental return to the stage for the 2026 Fifty Something Tour. Marking the first time surviving members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have hit the road since their 2015 retirement, the announcement instantly ignited a mix of overwhelming euphoria and deep emotional processing within the rock community.
Resurrecting the Rush moniker without their legendary drummer and primary lyricist Neil Peart—who passed away in January 2020 after a fiercely private battle with glioblastoma—was a choice fraught with immense emotional weight. Frontman Geddy Lee has now pulled back the curtain on the intensely personal, highly sensitive conversations that took place behind closed doors before the band committed to a new chapter.
An “Uncomfortable” But Vital Conversation
Speaking candidly about the decision to move forward under the Rush banner, Geddy Lee admitted that approaching Neil Peart’s family for their blessing was an incredibly delicate process. The surviving members refused to take a single step forward without the family’s explicit emotional clearance.
“It was uncomfortable,” Lee shared slowly, reflecting on the initial discussions. “They had to get their heads around us moving forwards, which they did, and they eventually gave us their blessing. But yes, of course it was surprising for them.”
Despite the initial surprise, Peart’s widow, Carrie Nuttall-Peart, and his daughter, Olivia Peart, ultimately gave the duo their absolute blessing, providing the emotional foundation Lifeson and Lee needed to step back into the spotlight. In an official joint statement, the Peart family expressed their enthusiastic backing for the tour while honoring the deep history of the band.
“We are thrilled to support the Fifty Something tour, celebrating a band whose music has resonated and inspired fans for generations, and to honor Neil’s extraordinary legacy as both a drummer and lyricist,” Carrie and Olivia shared. “Neil’s musicianship was singular… As both drummer and lyricist, he was irreplaceable.”
“She Has the Guts to Sit in That Seat”
With the family’s endorsement secured, the next monumental task was addressing the empty drum throne. Rather than launching a highly publicized talent search or recruiting an established multi-millionaire rock veteran, Lee and Lifeson leaned on a recommendation from Jeff Beck’s touring camp and chose German drumming sensation Anika Nilles.
Nilles, renowned for her intricate polyrhythmic mastery and phrasing, was remarkably the only drummer the pair seriously considered. Lee fiercely defended Nilles against the inevitable internet critics and purists who believe Rush should have remained permanently retired.
“Some people will never forgive us for going on with somebody else, and she has the guts to sit in that seat, to accept that gig and take whatever fans are going to dish out,” Lee told Guitar Player. “And that’s not a small thing. That’s a huge thing.”
Lee also noted that the process stood in stark contrast to the period immediately following Peart’s passing in 2020, when several unnamed musicians tactlessly reached out to audition for the band—an approach Lee explicitly labeled as “distasteful.”
Celebrating a Living Legacy: The 2026-2027 World Tour
The Fifty Something Tour officially commenced on June 7, 2026, with an emotional opening night at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. The tour has already garnered universal acclaim for its stellar production value and shifting setlists that deliver heavy fan favorites alongside rare deep cuts. To elevate the emotional weight of the tour, indie-rock icon Aimee Mann has even joined the band on select nights to perform “Time Stand Still” as a moving audio-visual tribute to Peart.
The massive trek is set to spend the remainder of 2026 crisscrossing North America, including high-profile stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden and a heavily anticipated four-night homecoming residency at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena this August. Lifeson and Lee have also locked down international extensions, confirming that the tour will sweep through South America, the United Kingdom, and continental Europe in early 2027.
