Gable Steveson Set for UFC 329 Debut After Stunning Bills Detour

Gable Steveson’s path to the UFC has been unusual even by elite-fighter standards. The Olympic gold medalist and two-time NCAA champion is set to make his UFC debut on July 11, 2026, when he faces Elisha Ellison at UFC 329: McGregor vs. Holloway 2 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during International Fight Week. UFC’s official listings place the heavyweight matchup on the event card, while previews describe Ellison as a U.S. Army veteran and Steveson as one of the most anticipated newcomers in the division.

Steveson arrives in the Octagon with a rare kind of background. He captured Olympic gold in freestyle wrestling at the 2020 Summer Games, won two NCAA Division I titles, and claimed four Big Ten championships before attempting a short WWE run. After that path stalled, he made another eye-catching move in May 2024, signing with the Buffalo Bills as a defensive lineman despite never having played high school football.

His football experiment did not turn into a roster spot, but it did add to the legend around his athletic ceiling. NFL.com reported that Steveson played his first-ever football game in the Bills’ 2024 preseason opener and later appeared in three preseason games before being waived. That short NFL chapter now serves as part of the build-up to his MMA debut, showing just how far his athletic profile has stretched across sports.

At UFC Media Day, Steveson made clear he is not trying to shrink from the moment. He said, “This was always the plan” and added, “I’ve been in big performances my whole life”, framing Saturday’s debut as another stage he expects to own. His coach, Greg Jackson, has also spoken highly of his raw ability and coachability, saying fans need to watch closely because Steveson may have an unusually high ceiling.

That confidence is backed by his early MMA results. Steveson enters the UFC with a 3-0 record, and the UFC has highlighted him as one of the standout attractions on the UFC 329 card. For a fighter whose résumé already includes Olympic gold, NCAA titles, WWE, and an NFL detour, the UFC debut is the next major test—and possibly the most important one yet.
