Penei Sewell Recognized as NFL’s Top Offensive Tackle Ahead of Return to Left Side
Detroit Lions star offensive lineman Penei Sewell has once again earned league-wide recognition, this time being named the NFL’s top offensive tackle in ESPN’s annual rankings, which are based on votes from executives, coaches, and scouts around the league.
The distinction is another major accomplishment for the 25-year-old, who has become one of the cornerstones of Detroit’s turnaround under head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes.
A veteran defensive coach described Sewell as the league’s most complete offensive tackle, praising his physicality, power, and football intelligence.
Since being selected seventh overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Sewell has steadily established himself among football’s elite offensive linemen. He enters the upcoming season after earning his third consecutive First-Team All-Pro selection, further strengthening his case as the best player at his position.
Despite the recognition, Sewell admitted he wasn’t satisfied with his performance during the 2025 season. The standout tackle dealt with injuries throughout parts of the year and was ultimately inactive for Detroit’s Week 18 victory over the Chicago Bears.
Sewell said the season was far from his best, adding that he expects himself to set the tone up front and make plays that offensive linemen typically do not make. He acknowledged that the year felt like a down season by his standards and said it will remain on his mind moving forward.
The Lions are expected to move Sewell back to left tackle after he spent most of his NFL career on the right side of the line. However, the position change is hardly unfamiliar territory for the former Oregon star, who excelled at left tackle in college and captured the Outland Trophy.
Campbell expressed little concern about the transition, emphasizing Sewell’s preparation and versatility. The Lions coach noted that Sewell has continued taking snaps at left tackle over the years and believes the move will be seamless, adding that the All-Pro lineman is capable of doing it all.
As Detroit enters another season with Super Bowl aspirations, the presence of arguably the NFL’s best offensive tackle remains one of the franchise’s biggest advantages.
