Billy Joel: ‘I Ain’t Mick Jagger’

Billy Joel, despite covering Rolling Stones songs and sharing the stage with Sting, joked at a recent performance at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, that he is not Mick Jagger.

Joel delighted fans with a hit-filled setlist and his rendition of ‘Start Me Up,’ cheekily reminding them of his distinct persona from the iconic Stones frontman, saying, “I ain’t Mick Jagger.”

During the Tampa concert, Joel and Sting also performed the Police’s 1981 song ‘Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.’ Sting’s set included solo and Police songs, as well as a notable duet with Shaggy, which added a diverse musical flavor to the evening.

In other recent news from the singer, Joel returned to the studio after nearly three decades away from new music. His most recent song, ‘Turn the Lights Back On,’ was released on February 1. In an interview with Scott Evans of Access Hollywood, he told the story of his return to the studio. It was inspired by a fan-turned-friend named Freddy Wexler. He noted:

“I met a guy who I was told wanted to meet me. He is a fan. So I thought, ‘Okay, I’ll talk to him for a few minutes. That’ll be the end of it. We ended up becoming friends, and he convinced me to go into the studio to work on a new song, blah blah blah. He’s right here. Freddy Wexler, the guy with the camera over there.

The track was co-written with Arthur Bacon, and Wayne Hector, and produced by Wexler, known for his work with top artists. Sting and Joel will perform together again during Joel’s tour later this year. Joel will also join forces with Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart at other shows. The tour will end with a big concert alongside Sting in Las Vegas at the Allegiant Stadium.
