Dave Grohl

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl shared a story about how The Beatles’ Paul McCartney paid him a visit at his house. Harper, his four-year-old daughter, reportedly gave the legendary bassist a tip while he was playing “Lady Madonna” on the piano.

Many of you are aware that The Beatles are among the most influential bands of all time. Today, legendary artists like Dave Grohl, a huge fan of the band, credit them with inspiration. Grohl once mentioned learning to play the guitar by playing along with their albums as a child before embarking on his musical career.

Fortunately for him, the legendary drummer from Nirvana grew close to Paul McCartney over the years. Although he was as terrified of the Beatle as everyone else was, the two have a close relationship and have shared the stage a few times.  including on May 23, 2015, when Dave Grohl sang and played guitar for the song “I Saw Her Standing There.”

In an interview, Dave Grohl talked candidly about his friendship with Paul McCartney. He shared a very endearing tale about something that happened in his home. 2014 saw the birth of Grohl’s third child, Ophelia Saint Grohl, and McCartney wanted to pay him a visit.

The frontman of Foo Fighters mentioned a hilarious anecdote about how he removed all Beatles memorabilia from his house just before Paul McCartney moved in. He also shared a story that demonstrated how admiration for the band never fades. McCartney feels compelled to play music as soon as he notices the piano in the centre of the living room, just before they leave the house after a wonderful time together.

As the Grohl family listens to the legendary bassist play “Lady Madonna” in awe, Harper, their four-year-old daughter, runs to the kitchen. She grabs a glass and fills it with change. When one of the world’s most talented musicians is playing, she puts the glass on top of the piano like a tip jar. This is when the hilarious and endearing moment occurs.

This is how Dave Grohl recounted the tale:

One occasion following the birth of my third child, Ophelie, Paul and Nancy were in town. They said, Hey, we want to come over and see the baby. When they arrived at the house, I immediately started hiding all of the Beatles memorabilia. Before a Beatle pays you a visit, you never really know how much Beatles memorabilia you have lying around.

He came over and we spent some time together. Our living room had a piano, so as he was leaving, he couldn’t help himself. He simply sat down and began to play “Lady Madonna” on my living room piano. It really is mind-blowing. Then, my four-year-old daughter Harper runs into the kitchen, fills a coffee cup with spare change. And places it on the piano in the style of a tip jar.
