Gene Simmons, co-founding bassist and frontman of the rock band KISS, has issued a public apology after drawing criticism for comments he made about the death of his former bandmate Ace Frehley. Simmons’ initial remarks, suggesting that a series of “bad decisions” played a role in Frehley’s passing, were widely regarded as insensitive by fans and commentators.

Frehley, KISS’ original lead guitarist, died on October 16, 2025, at the age of 74 following a fall at his New Jersey home that resulted in fatal injuries. A medical examiner ruled the death accidental due to blunt force trauma to the head, and his passing prompted tributes from across the music community.

In a December 10 social media post, Simmons acknowledged that the language he used in a recent interview was hurtful. “On reflection, I was wrong for using the words I used. I humbly apologize,” he said, adding that he did not intend to harm Frehley’s legacy and affirming his long-standing affection for his former bandmate.

Simmons’ initial comments, made in an interview published earlier in December, referenced what he described as lifestyle choices and decisions Frehley had made in past decades. Those remarks sparked immediate backlash from fans mourning the guitarist and from observers who said the timing and wording lacked sensitivity.

The apology comes amid a period of reflection within the KISS community, as surviving members and peers continue to honour Frehley’s contributions to rock music. Simmons’ retraction underscores the broader public response to comments that residents felt overshadowed the celebration of Frehley’s life and accomplishments.
