Kansas fans were in for a shock this week as the band announced Dan McGowan as their new bassist, following the retirement of longtime member Billy Greer. After nearly four decades with the legendary rock band, Greer decided to hang up his bass, marking the end of an era. His final performance took place earlier this month in Windsor, Ontario, giving fans one last chance to witness his incredible talent.

Dan McGowan, a familiar face within the Kansas circle, has now stepped into the spotlight. Hailing from southern New Jersey, McGowan is no stranger to the group, having filled in for Greer during live performances in the past. He’s also played alongside Kansas keyboardist Tom Brislin in the project Gold Rotation, making his transition into the band a natural fit. This latest change also marks the completion of Kansas’ rhythm section overhaul in 2024, as McGowan joins drummer Eric Holmquist, who replaced longtime drummer Phil Ehart due to health reasons.

Excited about the opportunity, McGowan shared his thoughts in a statement: “I’m incredibly excited and honored to be joining Kansas. I deeply admire their music and have the utmost respect for their remarkable legacy. I’m dedicated to honoring their legacy and am truly grateful for this amazing opportunity.”

Besides his new role with Kansas, McGowan is also a member of the progressive rock band The Tea Club, where he performs alongside his brother Patrick. The band is gearing up to release their sixth album later this year. McGowan’s creative talents extend beyond music, as he is also responsible for designing The Tea Club’s cover artwork—a testament to his artistic versatility.

Billy Greer’s departure leaves behind a lasting legacy. Joining Kansas in the mid-1980s, during the band’s Power comeback era, Greer played over 2,300 shows with the group. His contributions on bass and his role as the band’s emcee in recent years solidified his place as a key figure in Kansas’ history. Only founding members Phil Ehart and guitarist Rich Williams have served longer in the band.

With McGowan stepping into Greer’s shoes, Kansas fans are eager to see how the new bassist will make his mark on the band’s sound. Following in the footsteps of legends like Dave Hope and Billy Greer, McGowan undoubtedly has big shoes to fill, but his experience and passion for Kansas’ music have fans hopeful for what’s to come.
