Mastodon Announce New Album Marrow Deep and Release Josh Homme-Featuring Single “Snakes For Dinner”

Mastodon have unveiled the next chapter of their career with the announcement of a new studio album, Marrow Deep, due out August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings. The news arrived alongside the release of “Snakes For Dinner,” a new single featuring Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, who also appears in the song’s video.

The album marks Mastodon’s first full-length since 2021’s Hushed And Grim and arrives after a turbulent stretch for the band. The group’s long-running lineup changed in 2025 after guitarist Brent Hinds departed in March, later dying in a motorcycle accident five months afterward. Mastodon have since moved forward with Nick Johnston on guitar, while João Nogueira contributes significantly to the new record on keyboards.

According to the band’s announcement, Marrow Deep draws inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology and the fragile thread connecting life, loss and destiny. That idea fits the emotional weight of the record’s rollout, which follows the band’s short film The Mastodon In The Room and continues the grief-heavy narrative surrounding Hinds’ departure and death.

The new single also carries a notable piece of Mastodon history. “Snakes For Dinner” marks Josh Homme’s first appearance on a Mastodon recording since he contributed to “Colony Of Birchmen” from 2006’s Blood Mountain. The band describes the track as an emotionally charged epic built around crushing riffs and soaring melodies.

Mastodon bassist and singer Troy Sanders said the band is energized by the new lineup and the recording process. “Bill, Brann and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this,” he said, adding that the group now has “other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us.” He called that feeling “magical” and said it reminds the band of its early days, when everyone was hungry, united and excited to get to work.

Drummer Brann Dailor has been candid about the personal pain that shaped the music. He said the band had spent years unpacking loss, and explained that the album may help listeners who are also grieving. Dailor added that he hopes fans can find something in the songs that speaks to them, while admitting the band itself is still processing what happened.

Mastodon are also turning the album release into a major live campaign. The band’s The Poisonous Weapons Tour begins September 16 in Orlando with Deafheaven and Alcest as support, and the run is currently scheduled to close October 24 at Sick New World Dallas. The official Mastodon site confirms Marrow Deep is out August 28 and lists both “Your Ghost Again” and “Snakes For Dinner” as available now.

The tracklist for Marrow Deep is as follows: “Barbarians Blood,” “Poisonous Weapons,” “Your Ghost Again,” “Snakes For Dinner,” “Out Like A Lamb,” “In The Ruins,” “They’re Coming For You,” “Golden Spires,” “Moth And Bone,” “A Vampire’s Demeanor,” “The Vanishing,” and “The Three Fates.”

For Mastodon, Marrow Deep feels less like a simple follow-up and more like a reset point: new personnel, a heavier emotional center, and a guest spot from one of rock’s most recognizable voices. It is a new era, but one built from the same crushing force and ambition that made the band one of modern metal’s most important names.
