While Morgan Wallen was far from the only country artist to skip out on the 2026 American Music Awards, he became the prime target for presenter and comedian Matt Rife.
Rife took the stage on Monday, May 25, to present the award for Breakthrough Country Artist. Even though Wallen wasn’t a nominee in that specific category, his notorious track record for skipping industry events made him the perfect punchline. Rife didn’t just tell a joke—he orchestrated a full-on prank, calling out an imposter planted directly in the crowd.
“And actually, making his very first AMA appearance, Morgan Wallen is here,” Rife shouted into the microphone as the live broadcast camera immediately panned to a lookalike in the audience.
The stand-in looked the part from a distance, sporting Wallen’s signature shaggy hair sticking out from underneath a Red Clay Strays hat, paired with a matching mustache. But as the crowd erupted, the illusion quickly crumbled.
“I’m kidding, why would you even look?” Rife mocked with a laugh as the camera cut back to the podium. “Of course that’s not him. He hates awards shows. He’ll never be here, ever. He’s too busy selling out two shows on the moon, right now.”
The joke holds a massive amount of truth. Wallen’s commercial dominance is so unparalleled that a lunar tour doesn’t seem entirely out of the question. It’s that exact gravity that earned him the fan-voted award for Best Male Country Artist later in the evening, despite his empty seat.
The superstar hasn’t physically attended an awards show since late 2023, when he performed alongside Post Malone and HARDY at the 57th annual CMA Awards. While Wallen has never explicitly stated why he avoids the Hollywood red carpets, sources close to the singer note his absences aren’t a direct protest against the industry. Instead, Wallen rarely steps out for public events unless it is to play his own stadium gigs or support close friends. When he gets rare downtime from his grueling tour schedule, he prefers to stay out of the spotlight entirely, choosing to spend his time making music and hanging out with his young son, Indigo.
