The “terrific” drummer who inspired Nick Mason to become a musician

Nick Mason

For far too many years, individuals carelessly categorized the drummer as the presumed unintelligent member of every rock band. Indeed, during the heyday of rock music, certain drummers may have appeared less intellectually inclined compared to their bandmates. However, in recent times, there has been a shift. Highly intellectual individuals are taking up the drums, who could easily match the skill and talent of the most renowned musicians globally. Although each member of Pink Floyd had prior musical experience, Nick Mason attributes his knowledge to the influence of Ginger Baker from Cream.

It’s quite peculiar, given that Baker never saw himself as a rock and roll drummer. He possessed the skills to tackle any genre of music that came his way. Yet his interpretation of rock and roll often leaned toward the jazz realm. One could often find him infusing his performances with a distinct swing reminiscent of big band arrangements.

With a wealth of experience and undeniable talent, he exuded a captivating energy when he took the stage. John Bonham and Keith Moon were known for their wild antics, but Baker’s prime was truly unmatched. He displayed a playful demeanor, but when he took the stage and passionately played his drums, he exuded an untamed energy.

Nick Mason found that kind of recklessness incredibly thrilling, expressing to Planet Rock, “Such an amazing character.” I owe my current position to Ginger…I had listened to records before, but I had never actually seen them. The curtains were raised, revealing Ginger standing at the front of the stage instead of the back. It seems like they began with ‘NSU’. And I couldn’t help but think, ‘That is drumming.’ That’s exactly what I would love to pursue.

On the other hand, it’s possible that placing his drums right at the front contributed to the tension within the power trio. Cream never pretended to have a harmonious relationship. The conflicts between Baker and Jack Bruce made them resemble a long-term couple who aired their grievances publicly instead of privately.

While Mason may have taken on the role of drummer in Pink Floyd soon after this performance, his drumming style was more diverse compared to Baker’s. Baker’s rendition of ‘Sunshine of Your Love‘ has a tribal feel. Mason’s more restrained performance on ‘Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun’ is much more captivating than his sultry blues jam.

It’s worth noting that Mason could throw down when he desired. Take a moment to observe his performance from the Live at Pompeii show, and witness a truly uninhibited man. Pay close attention to the song ‘One of These Days‘. He unexpectedly loses a drumstick midway through, swiftly grabs another one, and seamlessly continues playing without any sign of effort.

Although Mason occasionally played with Pink Floyd during his tenure in the band. Baker’s influence is always evident whenever he takes his place behind the drum set. The rest of Pink Floyd may not have fully recognized Mason’s potential at all times. However, an exceptional teacher guided his musical abilities.
